Wymore council discusses demolition timeline, storage containers, carport permits and street-vacation request

The council heard from Marlene Nickell, who asked for more time to retrieve family items before demolition of her building. City Attorney Andy Carothers told Nickell the city must submit a timeline to the state by the end of June; helper Elliott Hawkins said they were awaiting an auctioneer’s schedule, and public works staff member Tim said the demolition contract had been bid to include the building’s contents. Carothers said he would follow up with Nickell and the city would seek the required timeline filing.
Kevin Marmon asked about different types of metal storage structures. Attorney Carothers said council members had disliked the appearance of Conex containers when they were previously offered for sale in town and that a conventional metal building would be more acceptable. Councilmember Max Allen said an existing agreement related to one container needs revisiting; Marmon said his intended use would be temporary, “a couple of years.”
On accessory structures, resident Mike Plihal asked whether carports require permits. Council members and staff said a city building permit is required and that failure to obtain one could lead to prosecution; the matter will be referred to the planning and zoning board for review of classification and enforcement procedures.
Resident Randall Baker asked the council to consider vacating F Street between 17th and 18th streets and a portion of 18th Street, saying he has maintained the roadway for decades. Tim recommended waiting for a survey before proceeding because street vacations affect all adjoining property owners; Mayor Meints said the city would be in touch after the survey.
The meeting recorded no formal motions tied to these land-use discussions beyond routine direction to staff; council members discussed next steps and follow-up with affected residents and property owners.
The meeting continued with separate agenda items on animal services and park requests and adjourned at 9:01 PM.
