Sanford discusses boat-launch improvements, fishing-pier parking and raises $2,645 for recreation projects

The Village of Sanford discussed several parks and recreation items at the May 11 meeting, including parking near the fishing pier, a completed boat launch expansion and beach dredging, and fundraising for future recreational projects.
Leah Ziems reported Midland County Parks and Recreation has added about 15 feet to the boat launch, completed beach dredging and will begin paving near the beach area; she also said the rail-trail bridge is under discussion to ensure it will not block future water flows. Council members noted Parks and Rec needs seasonal employees.
The council considered whether to return the fishing-pier area to one-way traffic or to add parking on the eastbound side after water levels rose; no final design or vote was recorded. The Midland Area Community Foundation’s Give Local campaign raised $2,645 for prospective recreational projects such as a kayak launch or pump track; Phil Hathaway and a former city engineer provided a list of low-cost kayak launch possibilities for consideration.
DPW superintendent Matt Hall said he is investigating improvements to the alley behind Sanford Hardware. The council said it plans to limit concurrent projects while they complete post-flood recovery work such as the Storm Sewer Project and prepare for the anticipated Saginaw Road Bridge Project.
