Mount Vernon council authorizes bids for traffic signal design, demolition, road resurfacing and sidewalks

At its July 1 meeting the Mount Vernon City Council unanimously authorized staff to seek bids for multiple capital and maintenance projects and accepted a single equipment bid.
City Manager Mary Ellen Bechtel presented recommendations and requests: accept the lone bid for a large concrete saw from Diamond Equipment for $42,300; seek bids for engineering/design of traffic signals at 34th Street and Veterans Memorial Drive (a traffic study supported the need); seek bids for demolition of 18 identified dangerous or dilapidated residential properties (a list of 18 addresses was provided to council); authorize bidding for resurfacing of Fairfield Road from Stinson Road to the city limits (to be funded from FAU Funds, Rebuild Funds and local funds); and seek bids for the 2024 sidewalk replacement project covering Perkins (7th to 5th), Conger (12th to 10th), 21st Street (Forest to Herbert), and Forest Avenue (9th to Dawson Park).
Council Member Mike Young moved to accept the Diamond Equipment bid; Council Member Joe Gliosci seconded. Council Member Ray Botch moved the various seek-bids motions described by city staff; all motions were seconded and carried by unanimous vote (Yeas: Botch, Gliosci, Moore, Young, Lewis).
The demolition list provided in the meeting record includes the following addresses: 1500 Wescott; 1213 Jones; 1105 S. 22nd Street; 315 Opdyke; 616 Herbert; 325 Bell; 1312 Cherry; 416 S. 21st Street; 904 S. 22nd Street; 1017 S. 6th Street; 2216 College; 617 S. 16th Street; 1212 Jones; 315 S. 2nd Street; 213 N. 6th Street; 221 Opdyke; 1213 S. 24th Street; and 809 North. The meeting record does not include project schedules, estimated demolition costs per property, or contractor selections; council votes authorized only the solicitation of bids.
Bechtel said staff would advertise the solicitations and return contract recommendations to council for award at later meetings.
