Medfield committee adopts new K–5 literacy curriculum after two-year pilot

The Medfield School Committee voted to adopt a new K–5 literacy curriculum after Christine Power and James Callahan presented results from a two-year pilot that included teacher, student and parent feedback.
Power said the pilot prioritized foundational phonics work (K–3) and a high-quality core curriculum that builds background knowledge and coherent instructional routines. She described the pilot design—three teachers per grade, reading specialists, and special-education staff—used to test units, gather teacher input and analyze student engagement. Pilot survey results were overwhelmingly positive in teacher and student feedback.
Committee members praised teacher enthusiasm for the curriculum and asked about implementation. Power said the district will use scheduled spring professional development, monthly curriculum meetings and existing planning times to prepare staff for full implementation next year. The committee approved the recommendation by roll call.
Committee members said the adoption aligns with previous consultant recommendations and will be accompanied by implementation supports and data collection to measure impact.
