The Crawford County Board of Commissioners on June 23 approved a memorandum of understanding with Pittsburg State University to continue directing one-sixth of the county’s transient guest tax toward construction of a new outdoor track and field facility for a period of 10 years, not to exceed $1,000,000. The motion (26-291) was made by Commissioner Tom Moody and seconded by Commissioner Carl Wood and prevailed.
Sarah Runyon, director of Explore Crawford County, presented the agreement and told the board it continues the partnership approved in April and replaces a prior contract that had directed the tax to a different local venue. County Counselor Jim Emerson said this is not a new transient guest tax but a continuation of funds previously allocated to the plaster center that are now proposed for PSU’s project.
Commissioners pressed for operational details. Commissioner Carl Wood asked whether the county would face difficulty if a school or other group wanted to hold events at the facility; Runyon said there is an existing relationship with PSU Athletics and that event scheduling has been considered. Commissioner Bruce Blair noted the first scheduled event is expected to be a high school track meet.
The board authorized the chairman to sign the MOU. No vote tallies by individual commissioner were recorded in the minutes beyond noting the motion prevailed.
