Recreation Commission OKs using Yard Goats proceeds for dugout repairs; director details spring operations

The North Canaan Recreation Commission voted on April 21 to allocate proceeds from Yard Goats ticket sales toward repairs of the dugouts at Sam Eddy Field. The motion was made by Tom Bunce, seconded by Tonya Roussis, and recorded as carried.

The commission also approved an amendment to the agenda (moved by Melissa Pinardi, seconded by Tracy Allyn) and approved the minutes from the prior meeting (moved by Melissa Pinardi, seconded by Tonya Roussis). All three procedural motions were recorded as "motion carried"; no roll-call tallies were entered in the meeting record.

Chairwoman Lindsay Crane read the treasurer's report into the record, listing an operating account balance of $16,590.85. Crane reported that Ms. Camardi is finalizing ski-club finances and arranging payment for field clay; she also reported the egg hunt cost of $228 and said the commission is reviewing pool-house phone usage for unused minutes. The treasurer's report recorded porta-potties at an estimated $127 per unit per month and delivery dates for porta-potties as April 6 and May 30.

Director Adam Bunce provided an operational update: softball practice has started and the schedule is being finalized, senior participation is light, and five games were scheduled at the time of the meeting. He said baseball's first games were this week, with about 120 total participants across programs. Bunce noted a uniform shortfall the commission is addressing, and that he has met with the Sharon director to coordinate a Babe Ruth program depending on participating teams. He said IMS will occasionally use the tennis courts this spring and reported one net is not tied down in the middle though there are no holes.

On pool operations, Director Bunce said the plan is to drain the pool the first week of May, refill on May 28, and aim to open the week of June 15 in the late afternoon and early evening because lifeguards are still in school. He reported three new lifeguards this season; two should be certified by opening and one will take a certification class in June. Bunce also requested six pizzas for the pool fill night and said he will ensure guards have contact information for when he is away.

The commission recorded the egg hunt used approximately 125 bags with none left over and recommended using 125 bags as a planning baseline in future years. The meeting closed after a motion to adjourn by Tonya Roussis, seconded by Melissa Pinardi; the meeting adjourned at 7:34 p.m.

No formal budget appropriations, design approvals, or contracts were voted on during the meeting.
