North Canaan Recreation Commission targets limited pool opening June 13 after repairs; nine lifeguards hired

Director Adam Bunce told the North Canaan Recreation Commission on May 19 that the municipal pool will be filled on May 28 and the commission is targeting a limited opening on June 13 or 14. Director Bunce said nine lifeguards have been hired; one candidate still needs to complete required training and another must supply information requested by staff.

The director reported the pool has some larger cracks that the commission agreed can be caulked and filled for the short term but not fully patched before opening. "There are some larger cracks but there is not enough time to do patch," Director Bunce said in the meeting summary. Committee member Justin Ellison agreed to stop by in the next few days to assess what is needed for the immediate repairs.

Director Bunce said the plan is to have cleaning done in the first week of June and operate with limited hours the week of June 15 until after graduation ceremonies. He also said he is preparing swim-lesson signups and hopes to distribute the flyer to the school by Friday and will forward it to Chairwoman Lindsay Crane when it is ready.

Selectman Tom Bunce reported that Torrington Area Health indicated a designated cell phone can be used at the pool instead of a land line provided the phone remains plugged into a station at the pool house and does not leave the facility. Chairwoman Lindsay Crane said she would follow up with the selectmen about that option.

Next steps: Director Bunce will continue hiring/clearing remaining guard certifications, Mr. Ellison will inspect immediate repair needs, and staff will complete cleaning and the swim-lesson signup distribution ahead of the planned limited opening.
