Pella City Council on April 7 approved a consulting engagement with The Austin Peters Group to review the city’s classification and compensation structure and propose updates.
Resolution No. 7041 authorizes a scope that includes developing a classification and compensation system with an internal equity review ($49,725); reviewing and revising job descriptions ($15,950); completing a Fair Labor Standards Act review ($870); preparing and presenting a final report ($2,175); and providing a customized performance evaluation system with supervisor training ($11,600). The total cost for the listed items is $80,320, excluding travel.
Council and staff described the study as aligning with industry practice of reviewing compensation every three to four years and as a response to recruitment/retention challenges reported for some positions (for example, difficulty filling the Water Treatment Plant Operator position). If approved, staff said the study would begin in June with findings and recommendations expected in six to nine months.
Next steps
Staff will execute the Letter of Understanding with The Austin Peters Group and initiate the study in June, then present interim and final recommendations to Council for any policy or budget changes.
