Superintendent reports stable enrollment, summer programming and special-education caseloads

At the June 9 meeting Superintendent Shork delivered routine district updates: enrollment, grant and program status, summer feeding logistics, staff contracts and retirement notices, and special-education caseload metrics.
Enrollment and programs: Shork reported the district enrollment as 631 as of June 1. He said the Student Opportunity Act update the district filed with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education was approved on June 3, and staff applied for a grant to continue high-dosage one-to-one in-school tutoring for first and second graders that served 26 identified students this year.
Summer and staffing: The district will operate a summer feeding program beginning Monday, June 29, with on-site breakfasts Monday–Friday from 7:30–8:30 a.m., lunches from 11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m., and Friday afternoon grab-and-go weekend meals from 4:00–5:00 p.m. Shork said the district offered contracts to assistant principals being converted from dean positions and has extended an offer for curriculum coordinator; several retirements were announced across staff categories, representing many combined years of service.
Special education: The special-education update reported 124 students on IEPs (19.1% when counting 12th graders); completed evaluations for the year totaled 91, with 25 referrals carried into the school year and nine evaluations rolled into 2026–27 due to timelines. Staff are recruiting paraprofessionals, including a one-to-one nursing paraprofessional and positions for three paraprofessionals for 2026–27.
Kindergarten and next steps: Shork said there are currently 41 registered kindergarten students and previewed the committee action later in the meeting requesting school-choice funds to add a teacher, a paraprofessional and four school-choice seats to address capacity concerns.
The superintendent said he will keep the committee informed as grant awards, hiring, and summer program staffing are finalized.
