Commission explores possible historic district near West Market Park

Commissioner Bruce Boertje proposed that a district could include both sides of Franklin and Liberty Streets, the block east of West Market Park and houses on the park’s west side; he raised the question of whether West Market Park itself should be included and whether the City would approve that inclusion. Planning and Zoning Director Gerald Buydos said staff would research the process and believes the Community Services Board would likely need to be involved for park inclusion. Boertje also suggested a smaller district on Columbus Street near Oakwood Cemetery and asked about minimum sizes for a district; Buydos said staff could check with SHPO for guidance. Chair Kermode proposed Huber Street near East First and East Second Streets as another candidate area.
Commissioners agreed to continue exploring the possibility and to seek SHPO input and any required approvals from other city boards.
