The City of Pella Historic Preservation Commission voted 3-0 on April 13 to file an application with the State of Iowa seeking review and comment on a proposed McClatchey Mill Historic District.
The proposed district is described in the application as generally bounded by Lincoln Street and Columbus Street and East First Street and East Second Street and would include 49 properties. Commissioner Bruce Boertje told the commission he completed the site inventory forms and reclassified one apartment building and one home as non‑contributing to the district. Planning and Zoning Director Gerald Buydos said additional signatures in favor of a local historic district can continue to be gathered up until the commission holds a public hearing on formation of the district.
The motion to file the application was moved by Jill Jansen and seconded by Bruce Boertje and carried 3-0. The filing begins the State Historic Preservation Office review process and does not itself create a local overlay district; any local designation would require subsequent public notice and formal action by the commission and city council.
Commissioners did not specify a date for a public hearing at the meeting; staff said it would follow SHPO review and noted they will continue outreach to property owners. The Commission agreed to proceed with the State review step to solicit comments from SHPO.
