During the public-comment portion of the Dec. 8 meeting, Johnny, a volunteer firefighter from Rico who identified himself as a former county IT director, offered complimentary IT services and suggested cost-saving approaches for hosted services and licensing.
"I'm offering just another option in IT. I'm not trying to replace existing IT," Johnny said, introducing himself and outlining experience with managed services, next-generation 911, and point-to-point wireless connections.
Commissioners and staff asked about how the county currently budgets for Microsoft 365, where tech-support and maintenance costs are posted in the budget, and whether some subscriptions might be paid twice. County finance staff agreed to review Microsoft 365 billing, check for duplicate charges, and journal any required changes before year-end.
Why it matters: commissioners said the county must be sure licensing and hosted-service charges are correctly reflected on department pages and that any duplicated subscriptions be canceled to avoid waste. Johnny offered to review the county's hosted services and identify potential efficiencies, and county staff indicated they would follow up off-line.
What happens next: staff will audit Microsoft 365 billing and report back; the county will follow up with Johnny through provided contact information if the board chooses to pursue the offered review.
