North Canaan Rec Commission discusses Little League upgrades, fields need 44 tons of clay

The North Canaan Recreation Commission heard March 17 that youth baseball will proceed this season with roughly 110 players and that the Little League is considering facility upgrades that would require significant field maintenance.

Director Adam Bunce told the commission that Adam Karcheski, president of the Little League, "has been looking at doing some upgrades including [a] batting cage near the concession stand and lights for night games" and suggested Karcheski attend a future Rec Commission meeting to present details. Bunce said the infields will need work: "There will need to be 44 tons of clay." Chairwoman Lindsay Crane and other members discussed dugout repairs and the need to secure the scoreboard remote, noting the lock on the Little League shed will be reviewed with town staff.

Why it matters: With about 110 players registered, the Commission said field-condition work will be necessary to support morning and evening games if upgrades proceed. Commission members emphasized that any facility or lighting changes should be detailed to the commission so costs, timelines and maintenance responsibilities can be clarified before work begins.

Commissioners did not vote on any upgrades at the meeting. Director Bunce requested that the Little League’s president attend a future meeting to present a concrete proposal, including specifications, costs and where equipment (such as a scoreboard remote) would be stored and secured. That request stands as the next procedural step.
