Superintendent Gallagher told the Newburyport School Committee on Sept. 22 that the district’s new media lab at Newburyport High School is operational and will be named for Cindy M. Johnson following a $325,000 grant from the NEF.
Gallagher said the lab is in use by students but the district is "waiting for lighting to be installed in the studio." He thanked the NEF for funding $325,000 for the project and thanked Facilities Director James McSweeney and his team for in‑kind contributions such as demolition and HVAC work. Gallagher announced a ribbon‑cutting ceremony for the Media Lab set for Oct. 28 at 5 p.m.
Board member Brian Callahan noted that two construction companies working on the Media Lab project are owned by Newburyport High School alumni and each donated $5,000 to the project. The committee did not record any conflict‑of‑interest statements in the minutes related to those donations.
The superintendent also summarized broader district initiatives in the superintendent’s report, including an upcoming New England Association of Schools & Colleges (NEASC) visiting‑team evaluation at the high school the week of Sept. 29 and work on the Education Commonwealth Project to develop baseline data and a district dashboard.
The committee will hold a ribbon cutting on Oct. 28 and provide a public announcement with details ahead of the event.
