Manchester — Engineers briefed the council on the Anderson Street reconstruction project and presented a choice: maintain the current 34-foot width or narrow the roadway to 31 feet to save an estimated $32,000.
Project staff said narrowing the road would likely shift to one-sided parking and would reduce the green-space buffer between sidewalk and curb. Councilors raised concerns that reducing on-street parking would affect nearby residents and park users and might redirect traffic onto Styles Street. Several council members said the $32,000 savings was not large enough to justify losing parking and chose to retain wider sections and pursue necessary easements for sidewalks and bikeways where possible.
Council also discussed whether to apply special assessments to property owners as done on the East Main project. Members agreed to maintain the same assessment approach for consistency and fairness and asked staff to move forward with plans, including alternates for concrete versus asphalt and the need for storm-sewer trailing to locate utilities ahead of construction.
Staff will bring final plans and assessment resolutions to the next council meeting for formal action.
