Council reviews list of small asphalt projects, must prioritize within $50,000 placeholder

City staff presented a prioritized list of small asphalt mill-and-overlay candidates and asked the council which streets to designate under a $50,000 placeholder for small projects.
Staff said the list—including a New Street block, Clara between Doctor and Sherman, Tama/Marion intersection and several short failing streets—totaled well above the $50,000 placeholder. Staff recommended grouping geographically adjacent streets to reduce mobilization costs and suggested starting with the block north of the ice arena on New Street and Clara between Doctor and Sherman to come closest to the budget. The Tama/Marion intersection and other larger intersections will likely require additional funds or be moved to next year’s list.
Council members emphasized prioritizing streets with higher traffic counts and routes near schools and parade routes. One council member said they would pull funds from crack-sealing and maintenance accounts to cover a small gap to accomplish the two closest projects.
Staff will obtain final quotes and place the selected streets on the upcoming agenda for formal authorization. The council did not adopt a final prioritized list during the meeting.
