Northfield council adopts package of emergency resolutions and confirms new police dog

The Village of Northfield Council adopted several emergency resolutions and confirmed a new police dog at its Dec. 23, 2019 regular meeting.

Police Chief John Zolgus presented his department report and asked council to adopt Resolution No. 2019-86 to confirm the appointment of De Cache Von Koenin Vic ("Cash") as a village police dog. Council suspended the three-reading rule and then adopted the emergency resolution after a motion by Councilperson Renell Noack and a second by Councilperson Nick Magistrelli. Chief Zolgus said Cash "is certified in felony narcotics" and added that the canine "was not trained to detect marijuana."

Council then considered a package of other emergency measures. By motions to suspend the three-reading rule and subsequent votes, council adopted: - Resolution 2019-77, setting pay rates for full-time fire department members for 2020 (motion moved by Renell Noack, seconded by Nick Magistrelli); - Resolution 2019-78, setting pay rates for part-time fire department members for 2020 (moved by Jenn Domzalski, seconded by Nick Magistrelli); - Resolution 2019-79, setting pay rates for certain employees for 2020 (moved by Renell Noack, seconded by Nick Magistrelli); - Resolution 2019-83, temporary appropriations for current expenses and other expenditures for the period Jan. 1, 2020 through Mar. 31, 2020 (moved by Renell Noack, seconded by Jenn Domzalski); - Ordinance 2019-84, approving edits and inclusion of certain ordinances into the codified ordinances and adopting updated codified matter (moved by Nick Magistrelli, seconded by Jenn Domzalski); - Resolution 2019-85, amending limits of established open blanket purchase orders (moved by Jenn Domzalski, seconded by Nick Magistrelli).

Each of the listed measures was adopted with "all were in favor; none were opposed," as recorded in the meeting minutes.

Planning Commission member Alan Hipps announced a Jan. 15, 2020 Planning Commission meeting to consider the Zaremba Group/Dollar General final plans and requests for additional variances. Mayor Jesse Nehez confirmed the Recreation Board's January meeting was canceled and that the next meeting will be Feb. 5, 2020 at Village Hall.

Councilmember Nick Magistrelli publicly thanked Finance Director and Clerk of Council Jennifer Potvin for managing finance matters despite Potvin having begun her employment with the Village on Dec. 9, 2019. A motion to adjourn by Councilperson Jenn Domzalski, seconded by Councilperson Keith Czerr, passed unanimously and the meeting ended at 7:47 p.m.
