Northfield council approves new fire turnout gear purchase, authorizes NatureWorks grant application

The council voted to authorize the purchase of 13 sets of turnout gear—listed in the meeting record at $2,072 per set—and 30 pairs of fire boots, with Finance Director and Clerk of Council Jennifer Potvin stating the total cost would not exceed $37,000. Councilmember Renell Noack moved to approve the purchase and Councilmember Keith Czerr seconded; the motion passed by unanimous roll-call vote (Czerr, Noack, Magistrelli, Hipps, Domzalski: yes).
Potvin told council she has provided a redesigned financial report through April and that overall department spending remains below budgeted estimates as the village limits purchases to essential items amid the COVID-19 public-health crisis. Law Director Brad Bryan said the Ohio Legislature was working on legislation to reimburse municipalities for some non-budgeted COVID-19 expenses, such as additional cleaning, personal protective equipment and staffing costs.
Bryan also presented the February and March Mayor’s Court monthly disbursal reports; council moved to accept those reports by roll call.
Separately, council adopted Emergency Resolution 2020-14, authorizing Mayor Jesse Nehez to execute and file a NatureWorks grant application for playground equipment. The resolution was read by title, council voted to suspend the three-reading rule and then passed the resolution; the motions to suspend and to pass were both approved unanimously.
Village Engineer Rich Wasosky reported construction continues on the Zaremba Group/Dollar General site and that final punch-list work remains for the Houghton Road Project; he said the Ledge Road Phase II Project is complete. Wasosky also said Summit Soil and Water and the County Building Department will perform site inspections for the Dollar General project to avoid duplicate inspections and associated village costs.
Police Lt. Brian Zajac noted a submitted departmental report and had no further items. Fire Chief Jason Buss left the meeting early to respond to an emergency call and did not participate in later agenda items. Mayor Nehez said the Recreation Board will pause meetings during the health crisis and that a resignation from "Ms. Ware" will create a vacancy; interested residents should submit letters of interest to the mayor.
The meeting concluded after brief committee reports; council adjourned at 7:56 p.m.
