Superintendent briefs Bourne committee on benchmarking, special education compliance and technology upgrades

Superintendent Dr. Kerri Anne Quinlan-Zhou updated the Bourne School Committee on recent district initiatives, including teacher recognition efforts, benchmarking practices and strategic-planning progress.
Staff described a "My Jersey Your Impact" recognition where senior football players presented jerseys to K–12 staff members who had made an impact, naming player–staff pairs. Jessee Clements and elementary staff outlined benchmark assessment practices at Bourne Middle and High Schools and at the elementary level, noting the district uses Galileo for math/ELA/science and IXL at BMS; staff said benchmark data inform WIN groups, progress monitoring and Tier 1 instruction.
Director of Special Education Kristin Donahue reported staff attended a Devens conference on the new Individualized Education Program (IEP) and said the district is centering student voice in IEP development; Donahue also confirmed completion of mandatory DESE McKinney-Vento training and reported five staff certified as QBS Safety-Care trainers for de-escalation strategies.
Director of Technology Chris Oliver reported replacement of BES wifi funded in part by the federal E-Rate program, attendance at MassCUE and the MIT Day of AI Summit (noting work toward an AI policy), and that DESE will update the MCAS testing platform for spring 2025 — requiring new Chromebook software. Oliver said the district has applied for a $25,000 Massachusetts Technology Collaborative grant to fund cybersecurity measures.
Committee members asked clarifying questions during the reports; staff were directed to continue strategic-planning work and return with a grants update in November.
