At a May 6, 2025 meeting, members of the Township of Stronach Planning Commission and attendees discussed a Michigan Department of Natural Resources proposal to designate the Little Manistee River as a "natural river" through the township. Meeting minutes record that no one present favored the proposed designation, and commissioners said the matter has become political.
Commissioners and community members discussed drafting a letter from the Planning Commission, routed through the township Board of Trustees, to the DNR and to state legislators to convey local concerns. The commission also noted a DNR-related meeting tentatively scheduled for July 17 at West Shore Community College and agreed additional public meetings should include upstream townships, including Norman Township and portions of Mason County that contain the river headwaters.
No formal motion or vote on the designation was recorded at the May 6 meeting. Meeting minutes state the issue will be revisited with the Board of Trustees at its next meeting on May 14. The Planning Commission did not adopt a formal position at this session and took no regulatory action.
