Stockbridge council approves administrative hire, event road closures and DPW lab purchase; denies Simmons legal-fee release

At its Sept. 9 meeting, the Village of Stockbridge Council approved hiring a part-time administrative assistant, authorized multiple community event road closures, approved a DPW lab equipment purchase from the sewer fund up to $12,500, and denied a request to release legal fees for Simmons Properties. The Village of Stockbridge Council on Sept. 9 approved several routine and budgeted items, including hiring an administrative assistant, authorizing road closures for community events and purchasing lab equipment for the Department of Public Works.
Council President Ogden opened the meeting at 7:01 p.m. and, after roll call, the council approved the meeting agenda with the addition of a DPW lab equipment item. The council approved payment of bills totaling $74,725.42 on a unanimous roll-call vote.
The council voted to hire an administrative assistant at $15.00 per hour for up to 20 hours per week. The motion was made by Trustee Powers-Taylor and supported by Trustee Cattell; the motion passed with Trustee Howlett voting no and the remaining members voting aye.
Council members also approved road closure requests for All Clubs Day, the Mary Kay 5K, Harvest Fest and Homecoming, with the condition that the chief of police, DPW and the event coordinator meet with the village manager before and after the events.
The council adjusted a previously submitted quote from Heeney and Sons, approving an increase from $3,000 to $6,000 to account for corrected square footage; that motion passed unanimously. Separately, the council approved purchasing lab equipment for the DPW from the sewer budget, not to exceed $12,500, on a unanimous roll-call vote.
A motion to release legal fees incurred regarding the alley at 111 West Main St. associated with Simmons Properties failed; no members voted in favor and the motion was opposed by Trustees Fairbotham, Howlett, Morehouse, Mullins, Cattell, Powers-Taylor and President Ogden.
The meeting included departmental reports from police, DPW, zoning and cemetery audit staff and brief council comments. Anderson, chair of the Stockbridge Downtown Development Authority, told the council the SDDA contract requires allocating 20% of the clerk and treasurer's time to SDDA work. Council members raised resident reminders about garbage cans and grass clippings and discussed TextMyGov and unresolved blight reports.
The council listed upcoming meetings (SDDA Sept. 26; Utilities Oct. 2; Planning Commission Oct. 3; Regular Meeting Oct. 7) and adjourned at 8:44 p.m.
