Sherman commission reviews summer program enrollments, dock proposal and facility needs

The Sherman Park and Recreation Commission on June 8 approved two pavilion use applications, reviewed summer program enrollments and beach‑pass distribution, and discussed multiple facilities projects including a proposed expansion of the Town Park dock application to FirstLight.
The commission voted unanimously to approve use of the pavilion by Scout Troop 40066 on June 28 (motion by T.J. Fazzone, second by Kris Fazzone) and by Jeanette Moberg of Living Stones Community Church for July 5 (motion by Patrick Dillett, second by Kris Fazzone). Commissioners also voted unanimously to approve the May 11, 2026 minutes.
Program Coordinator JodiAnn Eure said Tiny Tots had a successful spring season and that Music Time With Miss Cheryl is nearly full; Mindful Movements and Pilates maintain small, steady groups. Upcoming offerings include free Sherman‑resident ice skating at the South Kent rink on Sunday mornings in July and August, Junior Chef Camps (Aug. 17–20 and Aug. 24–27) with one registrant per class so far, and a Brazilian Soccer camp (Aug. 24–28) that currently has no registrants. Eure noted the earlier school start date may affect enrollments.
Director John Wrenn reported camp enrollments and program counts: Junior Camp 57, Senior Camp about 82, Extended Hours 51, Early Dropoff 23, Swim Lessons 22, and 179 beach passes issued in three weeks. Wrenn said beach passes are currently picked up at Town Hall and that the Park & Recreation website lists the pickup location; JodiAnn Eure said she will work to add the location to the Town website.
Facilities discussion centered on a proposed boat dock expansion. First Selectman Don Lowe said FirstLight requested additional application materials, including the permit for the swim area. Kris Fazzone proposed adding six new fingers to the Park and Recreation dock at the south end of Town Park, which could create up to 18 slips combined with existing fingers; Lowe said the commission should include both the original dock/wall/boardwalk plan and the additional fingers when completing the FirstLight/FERC application and will have an engineer assess feasibility. Commissioners discussed confirming how many slips the CLA currently uses before finalizing plans.
On courts and fields, the pickleball group asked for an additional south‑side windscreen; Wrenn said one screen on the north side is typical, and the pickleball group had raised a few hundred dollars toward a screen that could cost about $1,900. Commissioners discussed Park & Recreation contributing toward the cost but made no decision. Court surface damage appears linked to squeegees being hung on the fence; Kris Fazzone agreed to relocate squeegee drying to prevent further damage. Kris Fazzone will also recalculate asphalt and labor costs for a potential tennis/basketball repaving project to be scheduled either in August or next spring.
Other items: the Scouts retain priority for the Scout House, followed by Park & Recreation programs; commissioners said the Senior Center planning group had not engaged Park & Recreation and concerns will be raised at a Tuesday meeting; Bill McCann of the Conservation Commission requested trail information for a presentation. The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
