Wakefield trustees approve reports, highlight full summer kickoff and new digital resources

Board members said the library's summer kickoff earlier in the week drew a full house. Staff reported they had ordered STEM kits that will be used during programming (including adaptations to story time) and that those kits should be available next week. Youth outreach plans include attending PTO meetings in September to introduce parents to library offerings.
Trustees also discussed online language-learning resources. Staff said Mango Languages will be added alongside existing services (including Pronunciator) and that the library will offer a kids'version called Little Pim as well as an American Sign Language add-on. The board described the new offerings as user-friendly and likely to be popular with patrons.
On budgetary impacts, staff told trustees that the materials budget has run over in places and that the library expects to use about $6,000 from state aid and gifts to cover the shortfall this year. The board flagged the need to monitor demand and consider repeating successful, capacity-constrained programs or expanding supplies if signups continue to outpace space.
What's next: Trustees accepted the reports and asked staff to continue monitoring attendance and budget impacts, and to proceed with the planned resource rollouts.
