Sylvan Lake council approves county agreement to operate storm sewer lift station

The Sylvan Lake City Council voted July 10 to approve an agreement with the Oakland County Water Resources Commission (OCWRC) for operation and maintenance of the city's storm sewer lift station. City Manager Martin said OCWRC will handle the lift station in the same manner as the city's water and sewer systems, with costs determined on a time-and-materials basis.
Councilmember Segal asked why OCWRC would not maintain the entire stormwater system. Martin responded that extending county maintenance to the entire storm system would be very costly and would require establishing a drainage district, which has legal and funding implications. Councilmember Buchanan moved approval of the agreement and Councilmember Clarke seconded it; the motion passed unanimously, with the final document to be reviewed by the city manager and city attorney.
The agreement does not shift responsibility for the whole stormwater network to OCWRC, and the council did not direct staff to pursue a drainage-district formation at this meeting. The vote authorizes staff to finalize the lift-station operations contract with county review by city officials.
