Pleasant Grove council votes to support Northern Belt Line, cites potential access and development benefits

The Pleasant Grove City Council voted to approve a resolution expressing support for the Northern Belt Line project, a proposed roadway described at the meeting as a beltway-style connector that could provide interchanges near Pleasant Grove.

During discussion the mayor described the project’s general design — “something very similar to a circle” with ramps and off-ramps — and said the city could benefit from improved access and potential commercial development off the planned interchanges. Councilors pressed for details on timing, land acquisition and local costs; officials said the project has received years of state funding but no firm construction start date and that placement of a large data center in neighboring Bessemer has delayed part of the route. The mayor said the city does not currently know a financial contribution amount and that proponents are seeking federal and state funding to cover the work.

The council emphasized that the vote was a nonbinding resolution of support, not an obligation to accept costs or land transfer. The mayor told the council the resolution is similar to expressing support for community observances and would not obligate Pleasant Grove if later terms are unacceptable.

Councilors were invited to review maps and supplemental materials the city offered to provide; staff noted Bessemer will hold a hearing on the project the following morning and that route decisions there could alter the alignment that affects Pleasant Grove.
