County development director promotes housing growth for Pleasantville, highlights need for natural gas access

Dan Nieland, Marion County Development Director, spoke to the Pleasantville City Council on April 21 about housing development opportunities in the city, saying the area has "potential due to its proximity to the metro area, good school district, and good incentives from the city." Nieland said he and Clerk Rachel Reed have been working with the University of Northern Iowa on an Economic Development Action Plan requested by MidAmerican.
Councilmember Aaron Hurt thanked Nieland for his time and work and urged that natural gas utility access be prioritized to enable expansion. Mayor Kody Jurgens said the city needs housing to support commercial growth and clarified the council's emphasis is on affordable housing rather than low-income housing. Nieland said some developers build without natural gas and offered to remain available for contact as the city addresses growth and the utility access question.
The council's discussion left further policy or funding steps to future meetings and planning work between city staff, the county development office and potential developers.
