The Chariton Community School Board approved the fiscal year 2025–26 budget on April 14, adopting a proposed tax rate of $14.15 and passing several routine motions by 5-0 votes.
The board voted unanimously to approve the FY26 budget after a public hearing with no commenters. Mrs. Sarah Willis moved to approve the budget with the proposed $14.15 tax rate; Mrs. Becky Shelton seconded and the motion carried 5-0.
In a single consent motion earlier in the meeting, the board approved the March 17, 2025 regular meeting minutes; a building rental request from LCHC for armory use with a fee waiver requested; several resignations including athletic and staff positions; letters of intent and contracts for new hires and officials' contracts; and the monthly treasurer’s report, deposits and bills. Mr. Jarid Howell moved to approve the consent agenda and Mr. Dustin Shivvers seconded; the motion carried 5-0.
Other formal actions taken by the board included approval of the FY25 budget amendment (moved by Jarid Howell, seconded by Dustin Shivvers); approval of the first reading of the 2025–26 school calendar (moved by Becky Shelton, seconded by Jarid Howell); the first reading of board policies 406–414 (moved by Dustin Shivvers, seconded by Sarah Willis); and approval of the Chariton DCAP District Plan (moved by Dustin Shivvers, seconded by Jarid Howell). Each motion passed 5-0.
The board also voted to change the last student day for the 2024–25 school year to May 23, 2025, and to schedule a three-hour early dismissal that day. Becky Shelton moved the change and Sarah Willis seconded; the motion carried 5-0.
The meeting included reports from board committees and principals, and Superintendent Brad Baker delivered his superintendent report. The board adjourned at 7:26 p.m.
