Casey council approves water‑main payments and draws, orders nuisance letter and street closure

The Casey City Council on July 7 approved multiple funding and administrative actions tied to the Water Main Improvement project and local code enforcement.
Council approved Change Order #2 for the Water Main Improvement project in the amount of $12,990.95 and pay estimate #6 for $41,559.53, both for Max Smith Construction LLC, after the changes were requested by Public Works Director Jon Welker and accepted by the mayor. Council also approved two Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) draw requests for the water project — GAX #7 for $2,801.00 and GAX #8 for $24,325.00 — and approved an SRF loan distribution draw (#7) for $17,701.73. Motions were recorded as Ayes — Rick Richter, Leland Acker and Rick Blake; Councilmembers Schiller and Wedemeyer were absent.
On other agenda items, the council approved a partial closure of McPherson Street for the Tin Lizzies grand opening on Aug. 9, closing the block from Pioneer Pub to the alley by the business from 11:00 a.m. until closing (motion by Acker, second by Richter). The council also authorized sending a nuisance letter to property owner Joey Draman requiring removal of a dead tree by Aug. 1 following a complaint from resident Brandon Penton; that motion was moved by Acker and seconded by Blake.
Clerk Gwen Blass presented June claims and the council approved routine consent items, which included payment draws to contractors and routine operating expenses. The claims list included a prior draw to Max Smith Construction LLC for $136,873.12 listed in the claims. The council also authorized the city attorney to pursue abandoned-property litigation at 801 Ellsworth St.
The motions on project payments, grant/loan draws, nuisance action and street closure were recorded as approved with three ayes and two absences. Council adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
