Pleasant Grove honors officers, promotes sergeant after dispatch emergency

Pleasant Grove’s police leadership used the Jan. 5 city council meeting to recognize officers and swear in a promoted sergeant.
Chief Reed told the council the city "got through the holidays with a really kind of safe community," and credited dispatch and first responders for that outcome. He presented an officer-of-the-quarter honor to the dispatch supervisor who shouldered extra shifts after a dispatcher suffered a stroke, calling that supervisor “one of the most valuable workers that you’ve never seen.”
Chief Reed also named the department’s officer of the year and announced a promotion: “Billy” will be elevated to sergeant. The chief administered an oath of office at the meeting. During the swearing-in, those promoted recited the standard oath to support and defend the U.S. and Alabama Constitutions and to "discharge my duties as a police sergeant."
The mayor and other council members thanked the city’s first responders for long hours and sacrifices during holiday operations. The recognition came during the council’s special presentations before routine agenda items and follows operational staffing challenges in the dispatch center that the department said required extended coverage.
