Commission presses owner to standardize dormer types, continues review for 84 French Road

The Sudbury Historic Districts Commission on Feb. 5 reviewed a revised dormer proposal for 84 French Road and asked the applicant to provide clarified, to-scale designs before the commission’s next hearing on March 5.
Owner Gabby Cefalo, accompanied by contractor Murillo Vieira representing applicant Fabiano Maia, presented a one-page colored rendering showing a more symmetrical façade that adds shed dormers at either side, a center portico and revised materials proposed as all wood. Cefalo said financial and structural constraints are shaping the final stamped plans.
Commissioners said they supported adding dormers to bring more light to the second floor and to produce a more proportioned front, but they objected to the current mix of dormer styles — a combination of shed, A-frame/gable and an arched/circular dormer — which they said made the elevation appear mismatched. Commissioner Pete Iovanella suggested one option could be combining three middle dormers into a single larger shed dormer to improve coherence.
The commission advised two clear paths for the applicant: either make all prominent dormers the same type (for example, all shed or all gable/A-frame) or present two schematic options (one with shed dormers and one with A-frame dormers) for comparison. Commissioners also required that proposed dormers align with the window placements below or that the applicant present a plan for corresponding lower-floor window changes. The commission requested to-scale drawings, elevations, roof plans showing dormer-roof intersections, trim details and materials/specifications (wood siding and trim) before re-opening the application.
Commissioner Taryn Trexler moved to continue the application to the March 5, 2026 meeting to allow submission of revised plans and materials; the motion passed by roll call (Trexler, Hagger, Iovanella, Noble — Aye). The application will return with the requested scaled drawings and specification details.
