Olga Faktorovich Allen invited representatives from the Global Heat Reduction Initiative to brief the Energy and Sustainability Committee on strategies to reduce near‑term warming.
Kiff Gallagher of GHRI explained that curtailing emissions of short‑lived climate pollutants such as methane and PM2.5 “provides an opportunity to bend the near‑term warming curve more effectively than simply controlling carbon dioxide.” He added that methane, though short‑lived, is “hundreds of times more harmful than carbon dioxide.” Committee members followed with technical questions about GHRI’s methodology and how the organization might work with towns.
Eric Simms, the town’s Sustainability Coordinator, said he was interested in pursuing a regional approach and will investigate the prospect of a consortium of Sudbury and neighboring towns to use GHRI consulting services. The committee did not take a formal vote on the presentation but recorded the action for staff follow‑up.
The discussion also touched on practical actions towns can pursue to limit local methane emissions and particulate pollution. GHRI representatives answered implementation questions and described possible cooperation models for municipalities.
