Monson committee discusses adoption of updated Grades 6–8 health and PE frameworks, requests lesson samples

Monson — The School Committee discussed adopting the Commonwealth’s updated Grades 6–8 Health and Physical Education frameworks at its Jan. 21 meeting but did not finalize a vote after members requested additional detail.

Chair Alison Morgan summarized staff recommendations that prioritize most Health standards for Grades 7–8 and place many Physical Education standards in Grades 7–8 with some trickling to Grade 6. Vice Chair Karen Nothe-Valley pressed for a clearer picture of current instruction versus what would be added under the updated frameworks and asked for sample lessons by grade level so the full Committee can see how topics such as healthy and unhealthy relationships and the D.E.C.I.D.E. decision-making model are taught in practice.

Nothe-Valley said she is concerned that focusing on small pieces of health content — for example, "sex education and gender identity" — could miss the broader framework and that committee members should avoid treating the frameworks as optional or selectively implemented. Superintendent Paul Foster and Chair Morgan said teachers already cover many framework elements and emphasized that state frameworks are guidance; they agreed staff could provide more specific lesson examples and a before-and-after comparison if the Committee requests one.

What’s next: Vice Chair Nothe-Valley said she would compile and submit specific questions to Superintendent Foster so administration can gather the materials the Committee requested. The Committee did not record a final vote on adoption at this meeting.
