The Sudbury Council on Aging voted unanimously on Nov. 10, 2025, to recommend that the Select Board amend the COA bylaw to expand the council to nine members plus two alternates, set three-year staggered terms, remove consecutive term limits and allow alternates to serve when members are absent or to be considered for full membership. The formal motion reflecting these provisions was made by Carmine Gentile and passed without dissent.
The recommendation follows work by the Membership Committee, which reviewed appointment policies from other towns. Committee members—Dr. Joel Bauman, Don Sherman and Carmine Gentile—reported that alternates would provide greater flexibility because they can fill in for absences; the committee also recommended three-year terms with staggered expirations to improve continuity.
Chairperson Paul Marotta and other members noted next steps: the COA vote is a recommendation only and any change to the bylaw would require action by the Select Board and an update to town governance documents before taking effect. The council recorded the motion and will forward its recommendation to the Select Board for consideration.
Votes at a glance: the council approved the Oct. 6, 2025 minutes (unanimous) and passed the bylaw recommendation unanimously. The meeting adjourned at 5:25 p.m.
The COA will follow up with the Select Board and report back to its membership; the next COA meeting is scheduled for Dec. 8, 2025 at 3:30 p.m.
