Aliceville council adopts ordinance setting future mayor and council pay; vote 3–1

Aliceville’s City Council voted on Feb. 12 to adopt an ordinance establishing compensation for the mayor and council for the 2025–2029 election cycle, approving the measure on a 3–1 voice vote.

The ordinance, as read into the record by the presiding official, fixes the mayor’s salary “at a sum of $1,200 per month” and sets councilmember pay at $400 per meeting, not to exceed $800 per month. Council discussion noted the change represents a $300 across-the-board increase compared with the current figures and included some confusion during deliberations over whether the mayor’s salary should read $1,500; the ordinance text recorded and voted on by the council sets $1,200 for the mayor and $800 maximum monthly compensation for council members.

Council members debated attendance rules tied to compensation. The ordinance specifies that mayor and council must attend two meetings in a month to receive full pay, and allows a missed meeting to be made up by attending certain city-related meetings (for example, chamber or board meetings) to qualify for full compensation.

The measure passed by voice vote with three members recorded in favor and one opposed; the opposing member’s dissent was noted in the minutes. No individual roll-call tally with names was read into the record during the vote beyond the chair’s announcement of the outcome.

The ordinance includes a severability clause and becomes effective on the first Monday of November 2025 unless repealed by later council action. Council members said the ordinance applies to the next council and mayor elected under the stated cycle and does not change current officers’ pay.
