Sudbury advances Hosmer House restoration process; commission schedules open houses and affirms collections protections

Sudbury Combined Facilities Director Sandra Duran told the Historical Commission that 29 interested parties have requested the request-for-qualifications package for exterior renovation and HVAC work at the Hosmer House. She said many respondents have historic-renovation experience and that the town hopes to award the contract by Jan. 31, 2026.
Duran emphasized collections protection during construction, stating that items remaining in the house must be packaged and sealed. Chair Chris Hagger asked about protection for the Hosmer House collections; Duran replied that packaging and sealing would be required for any collections left in place.
Commissioners reviewed recent Hosmer House public events. Commissioner William Andreas reported attendance of about 50 people on Saturday and 120 on Sunday following publication of an outreach letter. Mr. Durall thanked the docents and reported $272 in sales from the Hosmer House store over the weekend. Commissioners also discussed open-house scheduling and new signage; a docent suggested placing a life-sized cutout of Florence Hosmer by the back door and commissioners noted multiple self-portraits of Florence on display.
On a motion by Mr. Greene, seconded by Mr. Greenstein, the commission voted 6–0 to hold open-house events at the Hosmer House on Jan. 16, Feb. 15 and Mar. 15, 2026, from 1 to 3 p.m. Commissioners discussed additional 2026 dates to consider for later in the year and thanked volunteers and staff who staffed the Hosmer House booths at the Holiday Village Market Place.
Next steps: Staff will proceed with RFQ review and the commission expects to receive candidate information; the commission also requested new signage and further scheduling for 2026 open-house events.
