Commission advances Hosmer House restoration, archivist procurement and Hearse House opening plans

Commissioners on Feb. 10 moved several Hosmer House and Hearse House items forward, including design proposals for exterior restoration, archival procurement and plans for public open houses tied to Sudbury’s 250th celebration.
Mr. Hagger reported the Town received three proposals for design work on the Hosmer House exterior restoration. Separately, Mr. Durall stated that the RFQ response from the Sudbury Historical Society for an archivist had been accepted and that related legal processes had begun.
The commission discussed making original Hosmer House reports available to the public. Planning & Zoning Coordinator Beth Perry located the original Hart report in Town Manager files; Ms. Katz identified the companies that authored two other reports and said they are willing to share originals. Commissioners asked that the reports be bound as a set, placed in the Goodnow Library and posted on the Commission’s website; Mr. Greene suggested providing a set of hard copies to the Sudbury Historical Society as well.
For public programming, Mr. Greene said Hearse House displays will be placed inside the building and confirmed the commission will apply for a Freedom Way Grant to support the project. Mr. Greene also outlined plans to have the Hosmer House open during Sudbury’s 250th celebrations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with coverage scheduled in two shifts; Mr. Hagger and Mr. Durall committed to attend.
Conservation of the collection was discussed: Mr. Hagger suggested contacting the Northeast Document Conservation Center for specifications on light-control shades, and Mr. Wallace volunteered to initiate contact in spring. Ms. Katz raised safety concerns for visitors and possible falls; commissioners noted docent staffing was sufficient for the planned open-house events.
Next steps include moving forward with procurement steps for the archivist, selecting a design consultant from the proposals for exterior restoration, binding and posting the original reports for public access, and pursuing grant support for the Hearse House.
