Town manager: Atkinson Pool open for teams, public access delayed by temperature issues

The Sudbury Park and Recreation Commission heard an operations update Dec. 8 on the Atkinson Pool and current programs. Assistant Town Manager and Finance Director Victor Garofalo said the pool opened for swim teams on Dec. 1 but public access was delayed until Dec. 3 because of temperature issues; he said a minor punch list remains and “no air quality issues have been reported to date.”
Garofalo told commissioners the town is on track for Phase 2 work in May, that “the cove around the base wall will be installed within the next few weeks,” and that staff will shortly install a new UV system for the dive pool, a new computer system in the back room and new chlorinators. He said two Aquatic Supervisors are covering the director’s pool duties and a temporary contract with SSG is in place for monitoring and maintenance issues.
Commissioners also received a summary of current recreation programs: dodgeball, middle-school basketball, Skyhawks, High Point Athletics and a ski club that begins in January with about 150 participants. Garofalo said planning for Summer 2026 camp programs is underway and that registration will likely open in January, although the exact date is not set.
Mara Huston, chair of the Sudbury Park and Recreation Commission, noted staff adjustments following the departure of the Park and Recreation Director and the start of an interim director; Garofalo said the interim will work 20 hours a week and the permanent position will be posted in January. He added Park and Recreation staff hours will temporarily increase to cover gaps.
The commission did not take action on the pool during the meeting. The town plans to continue punch-list work and follow the Phase 2 schedule ahead of summer 2026 construction milestones.
