Cowlitz County schedules July hearing on critical‑areas update; planning fees to rise 3% July 1

Tracy Jackson of Cowlitz County Building and Planning told commissioners Monday the periodic review and amendments to the county’s critical areas ordinance will be scheduled for a public hearing on July 21 as part of the county’s comprehensive‑plan amendment process. Jackson said staff issued an RFP for best‑available science, worked with consultants and the planning commission, and is aiming to move the amendment forward this summer.
Jackson also said a final plat for the Cooper Hill Rural Subdivision (adding one lot off Spirit Lake Highway and Shaffron Road) will be on the consent agenda for signature, and that the department recommends a 3% fee increase for building and planning services effective July 1 to help recover rising insurance and internal costs. "This is a way for us to recoup our fees and or recoup our costs," Jackson said, noting it had been more than four years since the last fee change.
What’s next: the critical areas ordinance amendments will return on July 21 for a public hearing; the Cooper Hill final plat and the fee adjustments are on the next day’s agenda for board action.
