Sudbury officials investigate unauthorized ATV plowing on local rail trails

After a heavy January snowstorm, Planning & Community Development staff reported that someone used an ATV with a snowplow to clear sections of the Mass Central Rail Trail west of the Diamond and the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail north to Hudson Road.
"This was illegal and unauthorized, and Town officials are trying to identify the operator to advise them that they are not allowed to plow snow off the rail trails," the minutes record. Committee members discussed the finding; staff did not report a known operator at the Feb. 4 meeting.
Member Chris Menge also told the committee that State Senator Jamie Eldridge secured a $50,000 state earmark to benefit BFRT maintenance in Sudbury and Acton; the funds will flow to the Friends of the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail for capital equipment, and Sudbury's DPW was asked to confirm willingness to accept roughly $25,000 toward equipment purchases.
Next steps: Town staff will continue efforts to identify and contact the operator and will coordinate maintenance priorities with DPW should the town accept earmarked funds for equipment.
