Permanent Building Committee requests contractor proposal for Fairbank acoustic work

BH+A architect Thomas Scarlata and Vertex Project Executive Christopher Eberly described Bulletin 158 as a less-intrusive approach that replaces certain ceiling tiles with higher-rated acoustic tiles and disconnects some devices rather than extending partitions to the underside of the roof decking.
The project team told the committee that the certificate of substantial completion punch-list items have been resolved, including painting, masonry repairs and some tree replacement. Vertex reported a remaining Colantonio balance of $47,000 (which the minutes say includes the cost of a barn door that will be hung the first week of December) and a Woodall drainage balance of $8,691.32. The group also discussed planned additional televisions (two smaller units for the Senior Center lounge and Park & Rec corridor estimated together at $9,000 and one larger multipurpose-room unit under consideration at $24,000). Vertex estimated about $180,000 for potential additional acoustic work plus a $20,000 contingency and noted roughly $400,000 of the $900,000 Town Meeting article remains available for contingency funding.
Committee member Jennifer Pincus raised technical questions about potential sound transmission, which Mr. Scarlata and Mr. Eberly addressed. Combined Facilities Director Sandra Duran told the committee she has discussed the proposed work with the School Department and said she would like to proceed with Bulletin 158. Co-Chair Craig Blake made a motion, seconded by Pincus, to accept Bulletin 158 and present it to Colantonio with a request for a proposal to complete the associated work; the minutes record the motion and seconder but do not record a formal vote or result.
Next steps noted in the minutes include obtaining the contractors proposal, investigating any warranty issues in the spring (especially regarding a tree near the building sign), and proceeding with scheduled small remaining installations.
