Sudbury committee advances emergency ride voucher pilot, sets $30 voucher and seeks Uber changes

The committee agreed on a $30 voucher amount as a starting point; Adam Burney, a committee member, said he believed $30 would cover most emergency rides within Sudbury.
Committee members said staff (Nina Lurie and Jill Dube had previously met) would work with Uber on implementation details and protocols for after-hours exceptions. The group did not finalize eligibility rules or total pilot budget; members planned to return to the item at their next meeting on Feb. 6, 2026 to set program parameters and direct staff to contact Uber.
The discussion noted operational questions that remain open, including provider capacity for wheelchair-accessible vehicles (the committee said FedNor had not responded to outreach) and how to verify emergency eligibility during after-hours requests. No formal vote on the voucher pilot was taken at this meeting.
Next steps: staff will reach out to Uber about the splash-page option and software costs, and the committee will finalize voucher amount, eligibility and implementation details at its Feb. 6 meeting.
