The Sudbury Historic Districts Commission on March 5, 2026, continued review of an application to add dormers at 84 French Road and provided detailed design guidance to the owner and architect.
Owner Gabby Cefalo and architect Bill Martin presented revised plans showing all dormers changed to A-frame (gable) shapes. Commission members found the proposed dormers oversized and inconsistent with each other and raised concerns about mismatched window proportions between first and second floors and inadequate side elevations showing massing and the dormer impact from the public way. Chair Ahnu Shah said the commission’s mission prioritizes preserving historic character and requires thoughtful, coherent architectural design in scale, proportion and trim.
The commission advised the applicant to return with conceptual sketches rather than full stamped construction plans to avoid unnecessary architectural expense, and to present a clear program/list of interior needs so the architect can propose harmonious solutions. Commissioners suggested several precedents for Cape-style houses, including center-gabled dormers or a single continuous dormer, and encouraged the applicant to consider improving the entry portico to increase presence. The commission voted to continue the application to the April 9, 2026 meeting to allow the applicant to provide revised conceptual options.
What the commission asked for: conceptual sketches, a phased timeline (phase two to replace first-floor windows later), clearer side elevations showing dormer impact from the public way, and examples of precedent Cape dormer treatments.
Next step: The applicant is expected to return on April 9, 2026 with the requested conceptual materials.
