Steven Tupper, deputy director at the Cape Cod Commission, told commissioners the effort will combine multiple data sources and technical demographic methods to capture year‑round residents, part‑time residents, overnight visitors and day trip volumes. The commission said the analysis will help planning decisions and support funding requests because many grant and formula allocations are based on year‑end population figures that do not reflect seasonal peaks.
Tupper said the project is phased: an initial baseline using current data and a second phase producing projections to 2030 and 2035. The Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority joined as a funding partner because the results will inform transit planning and investment decisions.
Commissioners praised the study as a science‑based tool for planning and for improving the region’s case when seeking state and federal infrastructure funds.
