Barnstable County’s new entomologist updated the board and local officials on tick‑borne disease surveillance, rising health encounters and public education plans.
The entomologist said local emergency department visits for tick bites rose from 91 to 140 in a roughly six‑month comparison, a 65% increase, and that Lyme disease, babesiosis and anaplasmosis remain the most commonly diagnosed tick‑borne infections locally. He described seasonal peaks in May through July and noted that passive surveillance undercounts true exposure numbers because it covers only human clinical visits.
The presentation placed special emphasis on alpha‑gal syndrome, an allergic condition linked to certain tick bites that causes delayed reactions to mammalian products. The presenter noted Massachusetts made alpha‑gal a reportable condition in April and that awareness and diagnostic delays complicate patient care: “Alpha gal syndrome is not something we can test ticks for... diagnosis of alpha gal syndrome can take weeks to months,” he said.
The entomologist detailed planned outreach and materials — bilingual cards, a QR code to an informational webpage, community talks and expanded tick‑testing options — and said the county hopes to restore subsidized tick testing and expand volunteer and AmeriCorps‑based surveillance. He encouraged residents to use prevention measures, including clothing choices and tick checks.
Commissioners and select board members asked follow‑up questions about case clustering, deer‑population management, the role of rodents in disease reservoirs and options for testing and clinical awareness; the entomologist indicated research partnerships and health‑department coordination would be part of next steps.
