Local agencies brief commissioners on winter warming center that sheltered more than 100 people

Dave Stillwagon, introduced as representing the Mahoning County Mental Health and Recovery Board, said the warming center was coordinated with the city of Youngstown, Catholic Charities, the mayor's office and local agencies. He credited staff and volunteers for standing up the program quickly and said the center's operation likely saved the county money compared with hotel placements while preventing homelessness exposure during severe weather.
Commissioners thanked the partners and said they plan to prepare earlier for the coming cold season. Stillwagon said planning for next winter is already underway and that partners will explore options to avoid last-minute crisis response.
The presentation included recognition of specific staff members and a promise to collaborate earlier in the year to ensure smoother operations next winter.
