Orange committee approves fundraising-funded Gaga Pit at Fisher Hill after safety questions

Students at Fisher Hill Elementary presented a request to the Orange Elementary School Committee on Nov. 10 to install a Gaga Pit funded through fundraising, and the committee voted to approve the project.
Student presenters explained what Gaga ball is and told the committee the pit would be funded entirely through a fundraiser, meaning no cost to the district. Committee members raised safety and insurance questions during the discussion.
Karen Perkins responded to safety concerns by saying Pre-K students would not be taught to play and Kindergarten access would be limited; she said the activity uses a soft indoor foam ball and is not like dodgeball. Michele Tontodonato told the committee that, once the committee votes to approve the installation, the Gaga Pit would be covered under the district’s standard insurance policy.
On a motion by Crystal Clarke, seconded by Frank Hains, the committee voted unanimously to approve the Gaga Pit at Fisher Hill. Roll call was taken by Chair Mallory Ellis.
Why it matters: The installation will change outdoor recess options but the committee sought assurances about age restrictions, equipment (soft foam ball) and insurance coverage before approving the project. The district recorded no cost to the district because students will pay through fundraising.
