Orange reports MCAS gains; principals outline literacy supports and ELL update

Marie Cole presented the district’s latest accountability report at the Nov. 18 meeting, which the district characterized as showing MCAS increases 'from the 7th - 24th percentile' in the materials on file. She flagged a new science curriculum (KnowAdam) and said staff will continue focusing on family and community engagement alongside instructional supports.
Dr. Lewis reported MCAS training is underway following DESE changes; the school plans a pep rally to celebrate growth. Dr. Lewis also updated the committee on student engagement activities: 318 students attended the Monster Mash Bash and Fall Festival, the PTO vending machine and Otterrific award tokens were implemented, and fire and lockdown drills have been completed.
Anna Coburn presented a Glimpse into the Classroom focused on the ELL program at Fisher Hill. She said Orange Elementary School currently has 16 active ELL students and 7 FEL students, reviewed home languages and DESE testing guidelines, and explained the categories and exit criteria used to determine ELL services.
Committee members noted enrollment figures (Oct. 1 foundation enrollment: 506, down from 524 last year) and discussed that February historically brings some enrollment increases. The committee did not make policy changes based on the MCAS or ELL presentations at this meeting; the materials are on file.
