Otis Cultural Council approves author visit, buys flower barrels and declines Chamber membership funding

Jeanne Randorf, chair of the Otis Cultural Council, opened the meeting at 6:09 p.m. and noted that members present included Carole Burke, Arlene Tolopko, Deb Fogel and Susan Hicks. The council approved the minutes of March 19, 2025 after a motion by Deb Fogel and a second from Susan Hicks.
The council agreed to sponsor a visiting author for the July 17 book-club meeting after Sue Ebitz proposed the council cover a $100 speaker fee. Arlene Tolopko moved to approve the funding; Susan Hicks seconded the motion, and the committee approved it.
Randorf said she had purchased five flower barrels for a Beautify Otis program at $70 each from Home Depot and had arranged coupons for gardeners; she also said she will write an article for the Otis Observer about the initiative.
A separate funding request drew a different response. Jackie Gentile asked the council to provide $200–$250 for the Revitalization Committee to join the Southern Berkshire Chamber of Commerce. Randorf said the membership expense was not within the Cultural Council’s mission and the council would not provide those funds.
Other business included a call for volunteers for the recycling committee, with new member Tricia Smith volunteering to help; discussion of offering a Zoom invitation for members unable to attend in person; consideration of a Farmer’s Market table; and preliminary talk about sponsoring a free summer concert at Town Hall, which members agreed to revisit at the June meeting.
The council set its next meeting for June 18, 2025, and adjourned at 7:04 p.m. Minutes were submitted by Deb Fogel. Note: the transcript first lists a member as “Shanon Albee” and later refers to “Shannon” as ill; that name discrepancy is recorded in the meeting minutes and has not been resolved in the transcript.
