Members call for overhaul of committee self‑evaluation tool and refer subcommittee roles to policy panel

Members of the Whittier Regional Vocational Technical School Committee criticized the current self‑evaluation instrument as an ineffective, dated MASC template and proposed redesigning the process to produce actionable goals.

Several members, led by Miss Lu Patty, said the agree/disagree form does not lead to reflection or goal‑setting and suggested adding an open‑response section and a follow‑up workshop or retreat to convert results into committee objectives. One member said the form had "no flow" and declined to complete it for that reason.

The chair proposed a substitute motion to refer the broader question of finance‑committee formation and the delineation of all standing subcommittees to the policy subcommittee for drafting clearer policy language. Because the item as advertised was limited to a finance‑subcommittee discussion, the chair ruled a suspension of the rules was necessary to expand the agenda; the assembly approved suspension by roll call. Members then debated whether the policy subcommittee should clarify which subcommittees exist, define their roles and duties, and recommend whether to rename or reorganize committees (for example, clarifying the role of the executive committee versus a finance subcommittee).

After discussion, a motion to table the referral until the June meeting to ensure compliance with open‑meeting requirements was approved by roll call.

The superintendent agreed to research alternative evaluation instruments and report back in July or August; members asked for examples used by other districts to guide revisions.
