Stockbridge wins MassDOT grants for grader equipment and culvert planning

Town staff reported June 4 that Stockbridge received two MassDOT grant awards intended to improve unpaved‑road maintenance and advance culvert replacement planning.
The first award will fund purchase of equipment to be used on unpaved roads; the listed grader cost is $214,000 and the grants cover attachments and related items up to $250,000. Staff said the grant covers equipment purchase with no town match required for the equipment component.
The second award is a planning grant up to $150,000 to develop bid documents, complete design and obtain state approvals for replacement of the culvert on Route 183 over Shadow Brook; the town will then be eligible to apply for construction funding through the same program, with a potential construction award up to $600,000.
Staff said the planning work must be done first before applying for construction funds; if the town does not receive construction funds on the first try, it can reapply on subsequent cycles. The board welcomed the awards and asked staff follow‑up questions on attachments, street sweep capability and appropriate downtown use of the new equipment.
What’s next: Staff will order equipment per the grant specifications and proceed with planning‑phase procurement and design for the Route 183 culvert project.
